Safeguarding & DBS checks

SAFEGUARDING IN COMPLEMENTARY SCHOOLS
All organisations working with young people and children need to have a good understanding of Safeguarding and their legal responsibilities in the UK for delivering safe provision and activities. Advice about safeguarding in the context of Complementary Schools can be found on the NRCSE website (https://www.supplementaryeducation.org.uk)

As a minimum, all schools should have:
– completed registration forms for pupils including parent/carer contact details, emergency contacts, health and medical information and a data protection statement
– class registers showing attendance, absence and lateness
– a Safeguarding Policy Statement which includes names and contact numbers for people responsible for child protection and health and safety in your school
– clear procedures understood by all volunteers, staff and parents involved in your school about what to do and who to contact if they have any concerns

DBS CHECKS

DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. It is a national government scheme in the UK for preventing unsuitable people from working or volunteering with vulnerable groups, including children and helping employers make safer recruitment decisions. See https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service for more information.

See below for more information about how to obtain DBS checks for your school.

(NB Prices are for volunteers; DBS checks for paid employees are more expensive. The below information was provided by Sheffield Volunteer Centre in Sept 2017 so prices may have increased since then.)
